The Story Of The Raiders Stadium

Being one of the few remaining sports stadiums shared by two major league sports teams, the O.co Coliseum is the home to both the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland Athletics. Located in the Coliseum Industrial area of Oakland California, it’s part of what’s called the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum complex. The complex consists of the stadium and the Oracle Arena.

When the stadium opened in 1966, it was called the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and became known as simply The Oakland Coliseum or just The Coliseum. In 1998, Network Associates bought the naming rights and it was renamed The Network Associates Coliseum, which was quickly shortened by the media to The Net.

When Network Associates changed their name to McAfee in 2004, the stadium became The McAfee Coliseum. The name reverted back to The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in 2008 and it stayed that way until April 2011, when Overstock.com purchased the naming rights and named it The Overstock.com Coliseum. Two months later Overstock changed their name to O.co, and the stadium immediately became the O.co Coliseum.

The Coliseum, as the locals continue to call it, underwent extensive renovations in 1995, which added 22,000 seats, two state-of-the-art scoreboards, two private clubs, and 90 luxury suites – bringing the total to 147. Although the stadium was already unique because the playing field is below the ground level – giving the appearance from the outside that it’s a lot smaller than it actually is, the new renovations added a couple more unique configurations to the stadium.

The baseball layout now has an inward jog in the outfield fence, resulting in three distance markers at several points of the power alleys instead of one. The football layout follows a line from first base to third base, instead of going from home plate to center field, or parallel to one of the foul lines like other multi-purpose stadiums have done.

The seating capacity for Raider fans is 63,026, which includes the famous “Mount Davis”. Mount Davis, or sometimes referred to as The Alps, is the name given by fans mocking the owner, Al Davis, to 10,000 seats added to the upper deck. These stands are steeply pitched and the top row is perched higher than that of any other stadium. And yet another section of seats at one end of the field is known as The Black Hole – where the most fanatical Raiders tickets holders usually sit.

There are 10,000 on-site parking spaces available for $35 for cars and motorcycles, and $85 for limos, buses, and RV’s. It’s highly suggested that those planning to have a tailgate party should familiarize themselves with the parking lot rules concerning such activities before arriving.

Traditional concessions during the game are provided by Aramark, a recognized leader in providing food and beverage services to sports facilities. There are also specific stands that offer specialty items such as BBQ, popcorn chicken, pizza, and garlic fries. Alcoholic drinks are limited to 2 per person per possession, and a maximum cup size of 20 ounces.

As with any stadium, the Raiders’ stadium is most unique when filled with excited fans. Known as The Raider Nation, the fans bring the O.co Coliseum to life, and contribute to one of the most difficult home field advantages to overcome in the National Football League.

Hue Jackson and the Raiders

As rookie head coach Hue Jackson begins his coaching career with the Oakland Raiders, many believe that the often energetic coach has a good chance of bringing the Raiders back to the playoffs. Hue Jackson has been very adamant about the fact that he wants to be coaching the best team in the Bay Area and as Raider fans watch him take over the team, they feel confident that he can turn this franchise around. The team is currently 2-2 and have shown amazing progress. Hue Jackson is best known for his out spoken way of coaching and he is very visual on the sidelines. He was “trained” by Jon Gruden, ex Raider coach, and he believes that Jackson has what it takes to be a good coach in the league.

Though Hue Jackson is a rookie coach, he definitely has a lot of experience on the field as he has been on the sidelines for almost 13 years now before he was given the opportunity to coach the Raiders. He started off coaching for Pacific college in 1987 before he became the running back coach for the Washington Redskins in 2001. In 2003, he then became the Redkins offensive coordinator where he was known to be very tactical with the team’s system. He then went on to be the wide receivers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons and the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens before the Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis gave him the chance to become a head coach.

The Raiders have been a struggling team for a few years now and the fans are definitely hoping for a change. The Raiders haven’t won a Superbowl for almost 20 years now and the team’s last visit to the big game in 2002 was a disappointment. Hue Jackson plans to utilize all the pieces he currently has to help turn this team around and bring them back to the Superbowl.  Though many wonder why he has moved from city to city, he has stated that he has been able to learn from all the different teams and it has definitely made him ready for this moment. Jackson is now the main man behind the Raiders drive back to the Superbowl and he is hoping that quarterback Kyle Boller and running back Darren Mcfadden can help him along the way.

The team is currently going through more intense training as this is one of the assets that Hue Jackson brings to a team. He is an in your face coach that is best known for his aggressive approach to the game. Hue Jackson is very positive about this season as he is reassuring Raider fans that this is the year.  “It’s time to take the next step,” Jackson says. “The time is now. People say we’re two players away, three players away – no, I’m preaching now.” Even though star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha left for the Eagles, he believes the team still has enough pieces to make noise in the NFL.

The Latest Raider News

The Oakland Raiders lost last week to the Buffalo Bills in a nail biter they would rather forget 38-35.  The Raiders are 1-1 on the young 2011 NFL season after going 5-11 in both 2008 and 2009 and finally working their way up to 8-8 last season.  They are in first place in the AFC West, but have scored and given up 58 points this season.  Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had a career type game against the Raider defense last week and they don’t want QB Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets to have a little of the same in their match up on Sunday.

You can bet that the Jets Coaching staff have been watching tapes all week to find the weaknesses in the Raider defense.  Back in 2009 when these two teams last clashed on the gridiron, the Jets were humiliating the Raiders 38-0 so Jet QB Sanchez decided to chow down on a hot dog on the bench.  The Raiders saw this as an insult and they plan to remember it on Sunday.  The Raiders used to be one of the most intimidating and popular teams in the NFL.  Last year they could barely sell out Raiders tickets and this year doesn’t look much better.

Of course a few quick wins would cause a bandwagon effect that would certainly get the fans excited to purchase Raiders tickets.  The Oakland Raider news would be sensational if they were to knock off the highly favored Jets this weekend.  Kicker Sebastian Janikowski has did his best to get the crowd excited by kicking 11 touchbacks in as many kickoffs and tying a league record 63 yard field goal in week 1.

The Oakland Raiders news of the past is that they were bullies and they placed fear into the teams who dared confront them on the field.  If the Raiders want to win the AFC West they are going to have to revive some of that spirit into the team of the present.  Jason Campbell threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns last week against Buffalo and has a 97.3 QB rating over his last 7 games.  Don’t count the Oakland Raiders out just yet.

Game 2 – Oakland Raiders vs. Buffalo Bills

In the present season, the Oakland Raiders currently rank second in the AFC division due to its wins against the Denver Broncos, the New York Jets, and the Houston Texans. They attributed their wins to their outstanding defense, but we are here to talk about their loss to the Buffalo Bills. It was the second game of the season for both teams who happen to be looking to go 2-0 for the season.

On September 18, the visiting Oakland Raiders were given the difficult task of taking down the Buffalo Bills on their home turf. To start of the game the Bills won the coin toss and decided that they would defend. The Raiders, who were on the receiving side started to mount their tough offensive. Both teams had a rough start because of offensive errors and tough defense, resulting in a scoreless first quarter for both teams.

The scoring began in the second quarter when Raiders running back Michael Bush went over the top at the 1 yard line to score a touchdown. Sebastian Janowski scores the extra point to make the game 7 – 0. On the next drive, the Raiders were able to intercept a pass and score making the game 14-0 Raiders. The Buffalo Bills respond weakly by being forced to kick a field goal to make the score 14-3. The Oakland Raiders on the other hand respond emphatically by scoring touchdown which further increased their score to 21 by the end of the first half.

The lead at the start of the quarter seemed insurmountable but the Bills had other ideas and come out firing. The Bills were able to score a quick touchdown to bring the Oakland Raiders lead down to 11 points.  The Raiders tried to respond by running the ball but it was fumbled and recovered by the Bills. The Bills were able to score in that possession which brought down the Raiders lead to 4.

By the fourth quarter, the Bills took the lead 24 to 21 on a 1 yard touchdown run. The Raiders answer by completing a 12 yard touchdown pass. The Bills on the other hand once again respond by scoring and converting to once again regain the lead but the Oakland Raiders come out gunning again by scoring another touchdown on deep pass in the middle for 50 yards and converting once again. After the last touchdown all the Oakland Raiders had to do was to hold on to the lead but they fail to do so by allowing  a short pass in the middle for a touchdown paired with a successful kick with only 3 minutes and 41 seconds left in the game. The Oakland Raiders mount one last desperate attempt to gain victory but fail to do so, allowing the Bills to steal one at home,38-35 in a fast paced second half in terms of scoring. Such a defeat is very demoralizing to the Raiders since they had victory in their crutches but allowed a second half run by the Bills, but despite the bitter loss the Oakland Raiders put their improved offense on display during the game which I believe will lead to more wins later in the season. Fans certainly believe that the Raiders have a good chance at the playoffs this year. They continue to show their support by purchasing Raiders tickets for each game. Only time will tell if this team has what it takes to make it to the Super Bowl this year.

Raiders vs. Broncos – Game 1 Review

The Oakland Raiders used the uprights very nicely to deliver a good performance at Inveso Field, formerly and most commonly known as mile high stadium. It was the first showing of 2 new head coaches taking over for their teams respectively. Hue Jackson for Oakland and John Fox for Denver, who has been around for some time in this league. This was a prime time Sunday night game to kick off the season.

The Raiders got into an action packed 1st quarter. Before they could get going they gave up a fumble recovery on a pass from Jason Campbell to Jacoby Ford. Von Miller, the Broncos first round draft pick who came up big in the first quarter of play. The good ole raiders blocked a punt by Darryl Blackstock for great field position after a 20 yard run from Darren McFadden who started this game with a potentially breakout type of year.

That play took the Raiders into the 2nd quarter as Jason Campbell connected with their fullback, Marcell Reece for 3 yards. Late in the 2nd quarter Kyle Orten is picked off by Matt Giordano. Sabastion Janakowski had kicked a 70 yard field goal and was feeling good on this day. In the second quarter, he had already connected on 37,21, and now a 63 yard field goal that ties the NFL record.

At half time the Raiders led 16-3.

To get the 2nd half started, the Raiders punted to Erin Decker, which turned out to be a big mistake, even though Decker was a standout receiver at the University of Minnesota. Decker ran the punt back 90 yards with 12:30 left in the 3rd after the first Raider possession. Kyle Orton had a bright spot in this quarter hitting Knowshawn Morino for a 24 yard gain down to the 6 yard line of Oakland, which set up a Matt Prader 30 yard field goal after a sack on Kyle Orton.

To begin the 4th quarter, the Broncos got the ball back as Kyle Orton goes back to pass as he drops the ball and the Raiders recover the ball as Lamar Houston falls on it and the Raiders take over at the Raider 35 yard line. On the 2nd play of this drive, the Raiders hand the ball to McFadden who run left for 47 yards and is out of bounds at the 1. Jason Campbell takes it in from the yard out to make this a 23-13 game.

As the Broncos try to get back in the game with Orton driving, on two incomplete passes the Bronco fans were chanting for Tebow, the prolific backup quarterback with high expectations for the fans. Orton completes a pass on this drive to Decker for 15 yards which 3 plays later sets up a 7 yard touchdown pass to rookie Lance ball from Maryland who hurdles over a defender into the end zone up the middle.

The Broncos still had a chance in this game if they could stop Oakland from getting a first down approaching the 2 minute warning but Michael Bush bursts up the middle for a first down run and the game is out of reach for the Broncos.

After the game the Raiders Hue Jackson acknowledge the Raider way of winning and knows there is a lot of work left to go with positive things to build on, especially in the running game. The poise was good to keep playing and stop the rival Broncos from really getting back in the game. Finishing the game and making their new coach proud on this day.
